REM M1890 SINGLE ACTION 44-40

Post by victorio1sw »

This revolver is presented with pictures. It has a 5-3/4” barrel with a proper muzzle crown and German silver front sight. The front sight has been thinned a bit, but otherwise looks correct and is in the proper position. It has the expected “Remington Arms Co. Ilion, N.Y.” address, “44 C.F.W.” caliber marking, and the associated monogrammed checkered hard rubber grips for a model 1890. Under the grips and on the rear tab of the trigger guard is the serial number 1350. However the gate is numbered 0611, although it fits the contours of the frame nicely. The original lanyard ring, often considered a noisy rattling nuisance, has been neatly cut off. Prior to being removed, the flopping ring left a noticeable impression in the frame butt. The overall extreme wear (especially on the grips) might suggest Mexican usage. It differs in markings in having the serial number externally non-factory stamped in front of the trigger guard and upside down on the frame butt (with barrel pointed upward). The addition of those external serial numbers, with die stamps unlike Remington’s, would seem to indicate that this revolver was the property of some commercial company, military unit, or police force. Somehow in the last 40 years I feel that I have seen this type of additional serial number stamping before. Perhaps there are some similarly-stamped Remington M1890’s out there in collections or museums. Any enlightening comments from the RSA Research Team or the many astute readers and RSA Members will be greatly appreciated.
