I've not seen that on a Remington barrel before. What kind of gun is it on?

During the 1930s and 40s Remington offered this special "long range" boring on their 12-gauge Model 31, Model 11, and Sportsman shotguns for from $3.50 to $5 extra. They were apparently unable or unwilling to modify their existing line to handle 3-inch shells, so this was their answer to compete with the Winchester Model 12 Heavy Duck.

Thanks Researcher,

The two examples I have seen, one on a 31TC the other on a Model 11.

The 31TC marking was in Script and looked "Gold Filled" maybe aftermarket. Long Range.

The 11 was block lettering with quotation marks around it. " Long Range "

Are either of them or are they both correct?

It's hard to " Look for fakes " as Fjestad suggests if you're not sure what the real one should look like.

Since, the adds refer to "special borings" are the overbored? and, if so, to what extent .730? .735? .740? ???

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but this seems to be the likely place for answers.

Best regards,

Ever since first noticing these listings in my Remington paper from the 1930s and 40s I've been looking at every Model 11, 31 and Sportsman I see but have yet to see one so marked. Both of my vent ribbed Model 31TC barrels, of 1949-vintage, are overbored, .743" and .744". The .743" barrel has .021" choke and is marked MOD. while the other barrel marked FULL has been fitted with a choke tube marked on its side ITC and giving .054" choke.

Here are the pictures of Long Range markings Will found on the internet.

This on a Model 31TC

This on a Sportsman

Anyone have any info as to if these are correct? Looks like The Sportsman has the regular Full marking in addition to this "Long Range" stamping.

I am new here, but I see some familiar faces. Researcher usually has the answers, if they are to be had. (we met briefly, at the PGCA meeting, 7 or 8 years ago, when it was at the OGCA show) And Destry, was good enough to send me a 20ga. Cutts tube, for a model 31 Skeet. Thanks again!
I have a pair of 31-T's, with consecutive serial #'s. 8xx1 and 8xx2. 8xx2 is a "LONG RANGE" quotations and all, just like the model 11 pictured. Maybe the lettering changed in later years? Maybe they lost/damaged the die used to stamp them, and since so few were ordered, they just engraved the letters in later years?

We measured the bores with a friends bore gauge, and I should have written down everything, but I didn't. I do know the LONG RANGE, had a .750 bore, that went about 2/3 the length before tapering to a smaller dia.
I will take some pictures and post them when I get a chance.
