Need help w/ identification!

Post by bpearce »

I have what appears to be a Remmington-Beal Naval cap & ball. There are a couple of things about the gun that are different.
What I know:
36 cal
No patent date on barrel, just the following: "N. Haven" inscription and a small anchor
Frame, barrel & trigger guard have the same serial # 25380 w/ letters "PQ"
The rammer lever has serial # 25106 w/ letter "A"
I have read somewhere that in approximately 1860 or 1861 Remmington sold some pistols (<1000) directly to the Navy w/o the patent date on the barrel. At some period of use the Navy examined all the weapons and refurbished with other like parts. Prior to placing them back in service a small "anchor" was stamped on the barrel in front of the backstrap.
I would like to verify this information and obtain as much history as I can on the pistol. The
gun belonged to my deceased father-in-law whom was a Captain in the US Navy.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.
