Original 1875 factory option question

Post by 9245 »

I’m trying to find some information for a friend about factory sight options on original 1875 Remingtons, what styles were available? Specifically she has an original with a post style front sight that is dovetailed in to the barrel, the sight base is brass and the sight blade appears to be silver. Looks like a decent target sight for the period, but was that a factory option or after market?

Hello 9245,

There were no sight options for the Model 1875 revolvers. The early revolvers have a "pinched post" sight, and later versions are a half moon, German silver blade sight. The post sight was threaded on the base, and the barrel had a hole drilled and tapped so the sight could be screwed into the barrel. The blade sight was put into a slot that was milled into the top of the barrel.

The sight that you describe is an after market sight, or gunsmith crafted. No sights as you described were used on the 1875s, and the sights that were used didn't require the barrel to have a dovetailed slot.
