serial numbers in publications

Post by 27Northtexan19 »

I notice that in magazines whenever anyone talks about a firearm they own and give the serial number, the last two or three digits are always Xs. Why?

The xs are used to "hide" the exact S/N while still providing info indicating date of manufacture etc.

I also have this same question, I understand the dating but just what's the point of hiding your serial no it's no your social security number or something ... Are you afraid you have a stolen firearm? I just don't get it.

I don't know what use the complete S/N might be to someone who has foul intentions. All I know is that the bad guys are always looking for information that can help them take your stuff. Providing an incomplete S/N can't hurt.
