Remington 1100 Shotgun Serial Numbers - Meaning

Post by remington.001 »

Shotgun: Remington 1100, 12 gauge, 2 3/4 shell:

Serial No. RS-----K

I purchased this gun new about a year and a half ago - out of the box. What can the serial number tell me?

I've checked "The Remington Shotguns" Shop Manual by Kuhnhausen, but the information caused more confusion than solved. I suspect the answer is easy for someone who knows his stuff - but that's not me.

I do not have my research materials to hand, but the following is true as to serial number suffixes.
V = 12ga. standard 2-3/4" frame/receiver
M = 12ga. magnum 3" frame/receiver
W= 16ga. 2-3/4" frame/receiver
X = 20 ga. 2-3/4" frame/receiver
N = 20 ga. magnum 3" frame/receiver
K = 20 ga. lightweight 2-3/4" frame/receiver (LW)
K = 20 ga. lightweight 2-3/4" frame/receiver (LT)
U = 20 ga. lightweight magnum 3" frame/receiver
J = 28ga. 2-3/4" frame/receiver
H = .410 3" frame/receiver
The serial number prefixes began with L in 1968 and go up alphabetically from there, but did not change every year. I don't remember where RS fell/falls.
Your 12 gauge, isn't.

I'm confused.

The "K" at the end suggests it's a 20 gauge? At the end of your note you say, "Your 12 gauge, isn't." Isn't a 12 gauge? But, it's a 12 gauge - otherwise I've been squeezing a lot of 12 gauge shells into a 20 gauge chamber. Of course, that's not possible.

Please explain.

I have seen a lot of Remington rollmarking "one offs", but they have usually been pretty good about serial numbers. A 'K' does not suggest a 20 gauge, it is supposed to be 20 gauge lightweight. If you have a 12 gauge with a K at the end you have a very unusual animal. I'd like to see a picture.

Thanks to all for the help, but I was still confused since I recently purchased the gun in a box from a dealer. Due to the confusion re the serial number, I asked Remington. After two messages, Remington finally answered and reported, that my "...Model 1100 Sporting was produced in 2012."
