1871 springfield RB ?

Post by yoder »

I have recently gained possession of an 1871 springfield rolling block ..This is the 36" barrel in 50-70 , 2 barrel bands, remington patent date of 1868, ESA mark on left of stock in grip area.I understand this was made for the army but it has no lug for a bayonet & according to this site it was to take a bayonet!...What do i have here? I'm new to this site & rolling blocks though a long time BP shooter! Since its in very good shape, i would love to shoot it if anyone can help me find ammo! If it turns out to shoot as good as it looks, i'll start reloading for it!
thanks for your help

The Model 1871 Army Rifle took an angular bayonet. It fastened over the muzzle and front sight. There is no bayonet lug on the barrel. You might try www.buffaloarms.com for ammo. They list a ".50-70 Sharps". I don't know what that is but may be the .50-70 government cartridge.

a bit of information. I recently started the process of getting ammo for my rolling block that was marked 40-70 just in front of the forend on the bottom flat of the octogon barrel. I ordered a couple of 40-70 sharps bottleneck cases (from Buffalo Arms) to see if they fit. THEY did not fit! turns out it is a 40-70 Remington bottleneck, dahhh, and when i necksized the 40-70 sharps bottleneck it fit perfectly. So there may be many different cases with the same name!
