1885 12ga grade and value?

Post by jetmek1 »

hope pic works but id like to find out exact grade for this. it has dark green hard rubber butplate with ERS script and green foregrip inlay, fancy hunting scenes on the sides and a fox on triggerguard. Wood cond is good with only minor finish blems. There are a few spots of case hardening color left and little to none on the barrels. screws all look orig and not buggered . The action and such is tite with no slop and it shoots great with RST ammo...I think its a 6 or 7 grade but not sure and id like a realistic value to look into insuring it...thanks

Your Remington is a Model 1885 Grade 6.The barrels should be brown Damascus.

Thanks for your response! Ive been calling it an 1885 because the s/n is 17246. I guess 1882 would be more accurate? A neighbor had it collecting dust and rust in a closet the last 1/2 century I could tell it was not a run of the mill shotgun by the engraving but wasn't sure if it had any sort of value. So I made a very conservative offer and he was happy to be rid of it. The quality of the workmanship on this never fails to amaze me! He also had an H&A 32long safety police I rescued ...he was about to turn it to the authorities to scrap. An friend of mine recently lost his gun collection to a house fire so I thought it mite be wise to insure along with several other antique guns I have if it has any substantial value. None of the local gunshops are willing to put a number to it.
