Grade 3 1889

Post by rudybolla »

I am looking at a worn, but tight Grade 3 Remington Model 1889. The issue is that 15.75" from breach is a dent that can be seen inside the tube. Not big, just visible. The Grade 3 is the higher quality model and the damascus is, reportedly, a higher grade material than the "decarbonized steel" of the Grade 1. Is a dent such as the one described likely to be a fatal flaw in this gun? Thanks!

Only an examination by a barrel man knowlegeable in Damascus barrels can answer that question -- Keith Kearcher, Buck Hamlin, etc.

Can just the tubes be sent to a person knowledgeable in damascus barrels to get an opinion?

That is exactly what I did when Keith removed a dent and rebrowned the Laminated Steel barrels of my Parry Arms Co. hammer gun.
