1858 Remington New Model US
1858 Remington New Model US
First post to the forum.
I have some questions for the knowledgable on this forum. I am contemplating purchase of a US contract 1868 NM revolver. The serial is 93,3xx and is in very good shape. The left grip is cartouched although I haven't researched the initials yet. There are no US markings on the gun. There are many different single letter stamps on the various parts of the revolver. The cylinder is NOT serial numbered but has the "P" on the rear. I'm thinking it should be numbered? The barrel number matches the number under the grip on the frame. The wood grips have the serial number written in pencil on both panels. Could the cylinder be a replacement?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for your help. It convinces me the revolver is original and un-altered. Now the decision to purchase must be made. I've attached some images. Any comments are appreciated.

That is one in all original shape. Halos around stampings looks intact, so it is not refinish.
Post more pics when you can.

Re: 1858 Remington New Model US
Thanks again for the assist. The cartouch appears to be "BH". Can this gun be dated?

''BH'' means Benjamin Hannis principal sub-inspector of Allen & Wheelock, Colt M1860, Remington, Savage Figure 8 and Starr Revolvers 1861.Serial number is necessary for date of manufacture identification.gunnertwo wrote: The cartouch appears to be "BH".

Thank you again for the information.
Can you recommend any books on Remington's? I would be looking for information on older production handguns.

Just shows what the "experts" on this forum know - not a lot.vonvladimir wrote:There are no serial numbers on the Remington New Model Army cylinders. On none of them ,exept on convertet ones for metalic cartridges.gunnertwo wrote: Could the cylinder be a replacement?

Original 1860's cylinders did, indeed, have serial numbers stamped on the "butt" of the cylinder, where the pawl ratchet indents are - on the circumference. They also included a sub-inspector's letter stamp.
I joined this forum to get some answers to my questions - got diddly-squat, not even a "welcome". Seems to me that the forum members are not a very friendly bunch!
Myself (from England) and a new member from Australia haven't had anything back from our requests for information. Lots of "viewings" but no responses.
See below - Scotch Mist? From my August 1863 .44 transitional Army revolver.
