From the serial number I think you have an Remington old model civil war gun. What the gun look lile? What are the markings on top of the barrel? What is the caliber? Jay Huber RSA

if you can go to auctionarms.com go to antique guns page 3 item #8947322 it looks identicle to that but not in that good of shape. How can i find out if this is a military issued gun, who issued to, or what regiment. Also can the serial number tell me an actual date it was made?

Your gun is a Navy New Model according to the serial made about July of 1862. We have no records of who it was assigned to. Does it have a Military Cartouch stamped on the left grip? Some were used by the Navy and also the Cavalry. Yours is in the serial range that was assigned ti=o the Army and may have little inspector initials stamped on various parts of the the gun if it was for the army. Jay Huber
