Remington Model 12 production date?

Post by thatoneguy82 »

I just got this old model 12A, and its posing some questions with regard to getting a proper date of manufacture. The serial # is 2115xx, and the barrel code is D over L, D over L by my reading indicates a barrel proofing date of Sept 1942, but by then these rifles were 6 years out of production. Anybody have any thoughts?

Maybe you just need to reverse the barrel code and make it Febuary of 1935

But that doesn't make sense either because its serial# puts it in the first 1/4 of production, and the receiver isn't marked Model 12 as they were later in its production.

Those are proof stamps. Yours was made in 1913. 1913 production started with #71805 and ended with #238343. Enjoy your early M/12!!

Barrel codes weren't used until 1921. The model 12 was first stamped on the barrel in 1917 at approximately #390XXX although Remington advertised the rifle as the Model 12 as early as 1910. The Model stamp was moved to the receiver in 1924.
