1873 whitmore price check

Post by jetmek1 »

Found a grade 3 nice tite lockup clean shiney bores no barrel dents or buggered screws. The bad is spots of rust and pitting on barrels looks pretty deep at muzzle and a stock crack from left lockplate up to top tang. Asking 1100 thats seems way too high for one with issues. Would i be correct?

I think you are right, I've been looking for a Remington lifter double for over a year but I wouldn't pay close to $1100 for what you have described. I might be able to live with the rust and pitting on the outside of the barrels, but stock cracks and splits are a deal breaker for me.

I bought one like yours [ grade 3 or 4 ] about 3 months ago for 800. The Damascus pattern wasn't as visible as yours. The bores were a little shiny - got it home and found out the chokes were opened up a little. I've had three of them over the years, but the other two had 1.5 DAC and 2.25 DAH. I like lots of drop and this last one had 2 DAC and 3 DAH - my kind of gun. This one will be a keeper. The only down side so far is I reload with Cheddite primers and because the firing pins hit at a angle they puncture the primers and there's blow back. I just sold a buddy 5000 Cheddites so I'll pick up either Federal or Winchester primers. Would like to use Remington primers, but God they're expensive, and hardly anyone carries them. Sure wish Remington would lower prices down around the others.

You stop and think, 1100 isn't all that bad. I think the Remingtons are way under priced. How many of the 73 graded guns do you think were made ? Or for that matter, how many Remington graded SxSs of any year. I don't think Remington catered to the upper class, but more to the working man who bought the field grade gun. I think graded Remingtons are far and few in between. You never know about gun values - which ones will increase or decrease. You get a chance to buy at the low end there's no where else to go but up. Just about any gun stock crack can be fixed, and usually for not all that much. Talk the guy down, and maybe someone like Researcher would have a lead on a stock repairman. Maybe this guy www.thestockdr.com Good luck

I appreciate all your replies...the stock crack doesn't scare me so much as the rust. It has dime sized spots on the outside and one barrel is kinda ragged at the muzzle im pretty confident it will not clean up without leaving heavy pits. I would really like to add one to my collection but not sure it is worth it.

What is that Damascus pattern called ? Maybe Researcher will chime in. Well, it's been awhile - did you beat him down and buy it ? You're not gonna find very many graded 1873s.

The best I can tell is that it has either twist or laminated steel barrels. According to Semmer, the higher grades used laminated steel. Comments?

Looks like some variation on Laminated Steel to me. Doesn't match anything on the Remington Damascus Salesman's sample, but I believe that sample stick to be 20 to 30 years later than the gun in question.

Well I waited a while and finally was able to buy this for 8 bills. Maybe I overpaid but Im stuck with it now. Its only cosmetic issues that are the detractors. Poor storage left some heinous rust stains and slight etching of outside of barrels. Im thinking of just going over the tubes with scotch brite and kero to remove the rust. Open to suggestions on pro restoration and cost? I know it will never be pristine but theres gotta be some way to remediate the stains

You might try some Hoppies 9 bore cleaner. I've heard of guys rubbing the barrels with this over a number of days and cleaned the barrels. JMHO, you made a good buy. I have around nine Remington SxSs and the 73 is my favorite because it's the only American made SxS with that type of opener and it's the first year SxSs were made by Remington. The only down side is when shooting clays I have to " look through " those mule ear hammers.
