C Giddings

Post by marlinman93 »

I'm looking for some information on "C Giddings". So far I've learned he is listed as an engraver/gunsmith in 1880 in Ilion, NY. I also found his son George Giddings was a stock maker at Remington, and died in 1923 from alcohol poisoning.
I purchased a very unique Remington Hepburn Match B with 34" half octagon barrel last May. I just got around to taking it down to look over the gun closer, and discovered a rollstamp in the top tang recess of the buttstock. The stamp reads, "C Giddings" and is not just some letter stamps put together, but a nice factory rollstamp. Unsure why the father, and engraver, would have his name stamped there, but did read on the LeFever forum that someone mentioned that high end Remingtons are occasionally found with a Giddings rollstamp marked in the wood.
Hoping someone here might have some input on Giddings, and if they've seen a similar rollstamp on any older high end Remington rifles?
