I am hoping someone can help me with identifying this rifle. It's a Remington Rolling Block, 45-70 caliber, overall length is 51-7/8", barrel is 36" and appears to be military issue. It has the usual pat. markings on top of the stock behind the hammer, and a marking on the top return of the butt plate "R" over a large "4". The "R4" marking appears to be hand stamped. Additionally, it has the letter "P" stamped on the left side of the barrel near the breach. The only other markings are the letter "B" randomly stamped on each of the three bands. Additionally, the sling ring is located on the trigger guard and the original leather strap is still in place. The rifle is in near-mint condition. I was hoping someone could tell me about the markings and perhaps what this rifle's place in history might have been.

Mystery Rolling Block Rifle
Dear Dozer,
It woulds be helpful to view a photograph of the receiver of your rifle (both sides). At first it sounded like a New York State rifle, but those were .50-70 Govt caliber.

I'll get back to you as soon as I have valid data to share.
