Newbie with a mystery rolling block.Possibly CW .58 to .50?

Post by STAGE III »

My son and I took a road trip and came home with this Rolling block and an 1890 Vetterli M70/87/15 in 6.5 x 52 Carcano.

The Italian rifle seems to be a good deal easier to figure out as or Remington has ZERO stampings or engravings (other than where he said his Great Grandfather carved "A" Company in it and a cross. He swears his GGF (Confederate) used it during the Civil War but the earliers I saw a rolling block in my one day of research since we got it was in 1863 or 64 when 20,000 were issued to Union troops but those were the split breech which this one obviously is not. I will still continue my search for his GGF and his military history but I think this one was probably purchased after the war and maybe he carved his name in it then, but I am wet behind the ears on this and hate to ruin a family story (I got a real good deal on it so either way I am good with it because I love a good story while it lasts).

The "generous" guy(offered me $100 for it) at the pawn shop I stopped at on the way home to see if he could shed any light on it said it was an 1871 Egyptian contracted Remington but I guess he has a better crystal ball than me ha ha

Stock is rough with some burns and dried splitting so may have been over or next to a fireplace unless it was wrestled away from someone in the midst of a firestorm of a battle (yes, I know, highly doubtful ha ha).

Thank you in advance for any assistance, we took all the wood off of it yesterday but not one drop of info and has so currently have no clue

Okay hopefully I am learning.

Been emailing back and forth all morning with a local man who saw I had this and he had me look at the caliber but of course there ae ZERO markings of any form on this weapon other than what was carved on it by the Great Grand Father.

I got my calipers out and it measured .50 but then he asked me to check if it was sleeved . It appears that is exactly what was done and it measures out to .58 on the OD of the sleeve meaning this may be a Rolling Block made using the original barrel and stock?

Appreciate any advice

Sights look even rougher than rest of the gun so they might be from an old muzzle loader? Have not seen a ram rod like this anywhere yet either.

Any thoughts on whether I am on a wild goose or does this look like I might be on right trail?

Be on the right trail for what?
* You need to do a chamber cast to determine the caliber
* The extractor is missing
* Don't see a firing pin
What's the bore look like? If it is sewer pipe - don't recommend investing money in the rifle

I presently found the same rifle in a barn. Which one is it?
