duplicating original type finish on Model 41

Post by dumac »

I'm attempting to duplicate the original finish on a 1939 Remington Model 41 .22 cal rifle. I have done some research on this and have been told the factory used a sprayed on tinted semi gloss varnish with possibly a coat of dark grain filler underneath....I'm open to any alternatives as long as the results closely match the original look. Has any one experimented with stains and found the proper match? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Dumac

Well after 6 weeks of hoping to gain some insight on a proper refinishing technique, My guess is it won't be arriving soon. :o With my knowledge of the original techniques, I'm off to to try some experimenting. I'm going to seal the wood with a coat of shellac and then slowly work up to the proper hue w/ gel stain. Once this is obtained, i will top coat this w/ either base varnish or a Poly based product although I don't want to get too much of a plastic look.
