Factory Rib?

Post by Renttis »

Ok, this rib is nothing like the vent rib on the 12 guage. Is it factory and, if not, any guess on who made it. If it's factory, I want it!

I know Simmons and Remington at one time were working together on installing ribs on some of the smoothbores. I don't see why they wouldn't help them out on the shotguns as well. Very nice shotgun whoever did it.

Smallbore Model 31s were only offered with plain barrels or solid ribs. The Winchester Special Ventilated Rib was a Simmons, but I've never heard of Remington Arms Co., Inc. doing any rib work with Simmons. From the 1949 Remington catalogue --

I am out and about in Anchorage this week, and Great Northern Guns has the mintiest 20-gauge Model 31 "Standard" grade I've ever seen. It is a fairly late 1941-version gun with steel receiver. Down side is it is a 28-inch full choke barrel, the least useful to me, and has a $649 price tag.

Simmons and Remington worked together installing ribs on some of the 310 smoothbores and on some 121 smoothbores.

It certainly looks like a Simmons. They do good work.

Simmons ribs I have seen on Win 42's or M12's typically have "Simmons Specialties" or something similar roll stamped on the left side of the rib near the breech end.
