Have a Remington shotgun called "The Sportsman", its a 3 shot Semi-Auto 16 gauge with a choke selector. It has a Duck and a Pheasant engraved on it along with "The Sportsman" on the bolt. It has browning patent numbers also. What i'm trying to figure out is: 1. what year it was made. 2. What model number is it.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Need some help!
There is no Model number, the gun was called "The Sportsman." It was a three-shot sportier version of the Remington Autoloading Gun/Model 11. The Sportsman was introduced in 1930 in 20-gauge, and the next year in 12- and 16-gauges.
When originally introduced "The Sportsman" had three birds roll-stamped on each side of the receiver, and "The Sportsman" was part of the roll-stamping on the left side of the receiver. The early 16-gauge The Sportsman were in the 200000 serial number range, and the 12-gauges were in the 500000 serial number range. At the same time The Sportsman was introduced Remington Arms Co., Inc. began producing the Model 11 in 20- and 16-gauge as well. 20-gauge serial numbers began at 1000000 and 16-gauge serial numbers at 1500000. In 1937 Remington reduced the roll-stamping to a single bird on each side and moved the name "The Sportsman" to the bolt. At that same time they added the roll-stamped bird on each side to the Model 11 and began stamping Model 11 on the bolt. That way they could use the same receivers to build either "The Sportsman" or the Model 11. So, at that time they dropped the seperate serial number series for the 12- and 16-gauge The Sportsman and these later The Sportsman were serial numbered along with the Model 11s.
When 12-gauge Model 11/The Sportsman serial numbers hit 499999 on Aug. 1, 1943 they then jumped to 700000. Give us your serial number and we can likely tell you what year and month your gun was made.

Feb. 1941 - This is when the receiver was made.
There should be a date code (2 or 3 letters) on the barrel. Assuming the barrel serial number matches the receiver, this will be the date the gun was assembled.

Lots of info on this site, if you take a little time to look.

Do I have to take the stock off? The only letters I see(with) the stock on is C K and then a proofmark. Sorry kinda new at this!
The C K on the barrel shows up as April 1941.

Re: Need some help!
CK would be it (on the barrel). No need to remove the stock.
February to April is a pretty short shelf time for Remington. Not unheard of, though.

FWIW, if the choke device on your gun is a Aero-Dyne Poly-Choke, the ones done by Remington at the factory had the flare, the threads and the petals of the choke milled integral with the barrel, and there will be no choke marking back near the receiver on the left side of the barrel.

Same exact choke! What are the values of these guns?
