Whitmore Lifter 10 Gauge
Whitmore Lifter 10 Gauge
Can someone help identify which model this is? It is described as having 32" barrels (steel?) with moderately pitted bores. SN 898. Worn, but sound wood. Tight action. Seller says 1875 vintage. Looking at it as an occassional BP shooter and wondering about safety issues. I shoot a 12 bore 1889 in similar condition with no ill effects. Thanks.

Re: Whitmore Lifter 10 Gauge
Model 1878.
Re: Whitmore Lifter 10 Gauge
Researcher is correct, your Remington is a Model 1878 also known as heavy duck gun.
With serial 898 it may have left the factory in late 1878 or early 1879. As far as we know appx. 2,500 were produced in this model. Yours does look like a grade 1 decarbonized steel barrels, check carefully that it is not twist steel. If the bores are fine, it should be OK. Check the chamber length, it is either a 2 7/8 inch or 2 5/8 inch.

According to seller chambers are 2 7/8.RemRB wrote:Check the chamber length, it is either a 2 7/8 inch or 2 5/8 inch.

With 32 inch barrels, a 2 7/8" chamber makes compete sense.
