Model 58 Can I get some information?

Post by Rem-Model14 »

Hi everyone,

A few weeks ago I picked up this model 58. The barrel stamp has a O (it is sort of odd punch for the upper right part of the O disappears making it look like a very off angle C but the ends are very, very close leading me to believe it is an O for I have never seen a C punch like that on a Remington) and a F followed by a 2. Am I correct that it was manufactured July 1959? Am looking forward to taking it out for some clay busting tomorrow.

I have heard a lot of positives and negatives about this model and am wondering if you all can share the true positives and problems with this model? The insides remind me a lot of the 1100 which my dad has had for over 40 years now and never has given him a bit of a problem. I heard it was replaced by the 1100 and that some claim it is a excellent problem free shotgun and others claim it won't perform in cold weather, jams easily, etc. So, looking for some opinions from those who would know. Thank you in advance for any answers and do know I appreciate it. I have pictures in the links on Google share so you can see my model 58.

The 58 was a very good gun. It was replaced by the 1100, but it does balance differently and some people like that balance. The two biggest drawbacks in my opinion, are the inside the magazine gas system that is harder to clean and seemed to get dirty faster than an 1100, and the attachment between the gas piston and the action bars, which tends to break. The adjustable magazine cap will blow apart if the gun is fired with the cap not firmly in one position or the other - and it is made of unobtanium - but that is not a design flaw but user error.
If Remington had not introduced the 1100 when they did I would have had a 58. A friend and his Dad both had them and I liked them. I have repaired several broken gas links.
What could have happened... did.

A Sportsman 58 Skeet Gun is what Chief Buntrock shot in the incredible 12-gauge shoot-off at the 1968 NSSA World Championships at Kansas City against Tom Heffron and his Model 1100, where they both went 250 straight in the event and another 800 in the shoot-off.
