Should I buy this Model 1900? Price?

Post by drport »

Local pawn shop has it priced $599. Today told me he would sell it to me for $395.
personally I don't think they know anything about the shotgun as they said the serial number isn't the serial number and that it's the model number.

12 gauge
Barrel length 28 (slight pitting)
Inside the barrel diameter right Barrel 710 left Barrel 715

I'd go for it. From what you've told us it should have extractors rather than ejectors. The price is right from what I can see. It is early 1906 production.

Thanks for the reply.. what's the difference between extractors and ejectors?

Also, would you shoot this gun? Clean up the barrel? Leave it alone?

Extractors will lift the fired hull out of the barrel about 1/4" and must be removed by hand. Ejectors are spring loaded and will "eject" the fired hull clear of the barrel when the weapon is opened.

There were four versions of the 1900 which was denoted as the K grade. Barrels were stamped as follow:

K - Remington steel barrels with extractors
KE - Remington steel barrels with ejectors
KD - Damascus barrels with extractors
KED - Damascus barrels with ejectors

Since your barrel is stamped K I assume it has extractors although Remington was not consistent when stamping barrels. At this time, the meaning of the other letters and numbers is lost to the mist of time.

Many of us still shoot these fine guns. I usually limit the load to less than 5,000 psi or black powder. If you have any questions, take it to a smith with experience with older weapons.

Thanks. Here are some additional pics. So you would buy at $395? Would you shoot it? Clean it up? Leave it as is?

Not a beauty but looks serviceable. My best bird gun has been my KED. Many pheasants blessed our table on T day. If it's tight I'd use it.

Unless you are a qualified double gun smith and can do all manner of repair and restoration work yourself, IMO it looks like a money pit to be avoided at any price.

I am certainly not above taking my KE-Grades into the field --
