1975 or 2005 870 wingmaster differences

Post by shooter92 »

Just got a 12 gauge model 870 wingmaster. Barrel number says 1975 or 2005. How do I know which one it is for sure? Any help would be great thank you

They made the 10 millionth 870 in 2009 so the serial should tell.

They are over 11 million now.
What is your serial number including suffix, that will nail down the year range for the receiver. Detail pictures of the barrel could nail it down too, but if it has RemChokes it's 2005.
What could have happened... did.

I believe I've heard 12 million mentioned in some Remington ads, though they may have been rounding up. Although, assuming they're selling new 870s at the same rate they have been over the past decade or so, they should at least be getting close to 12M by now.

Anyway, as far as manufacture date goes, if the shell carrier has the "U"-shaped flex tab cutout, that's also a strong indicator that it's not a 1970s gun. Older 870s can be upgraded with the new-style carrier, but this was more commonly done for law enforcement shotguns than sporting pieces.

As Virginian said, the serial number prefix will say for sure - unless your gun is some extra-special 870 edition with a non-standard serial. For normal 870s though, a 1975 serial number should start with the letter "T", while a 2005 serial number should start with either "D" or "AB".
