Winchester primers

Post by dieNusse1 »

My brother came across a box of very old Winchester primers. In no way do they resemble modern 209 primers or even the old Remington 57s. They are marked:

Winchester #4 marked W for Leader, Repeater, Metal Lined & Pigeon shot shells.

Appears they were made about 1900. Hadn't seen this type of primer before.

Never heard of them before. Quite possibly corrosive.

The Winchester No. 4 Primer was rather short-lived around the turn-of-the-century --

They were replaced by the New No. 4 Primer as I understand it circa 1904 --

which were used until after The Great War.

Try as I might this evening I couldn't find a picture of the No. 4 Primer.
