Remington damascus barrel grades?

Post by Trutta »

Were there different grade D barrels used? Were they make them in Ilion or imported them?

The rough forged Damascus tubes were imported from Belgium. The higher the grade of gun, the fancier tubes, and choices of patterns, were offered.

Remington Arms Co. catalogues of the day offered the following

KD- and KED-Grade -- Two-stripe Damascus
A- and AE-Grade ----- Two-stripe Damascus
B- and BE-Grade ----- Fine three-stripe Damascus
C- and CE-Grade ----- Fine Damascus Barrels
D- and DE-Grade ----- Extra fine Damascus Barrels
E- and EE- Grade ----- Finest Damascus Barrels

In his book, Remington Double Shotguns, the late Charles Semmer showed this Remington Salesman's Damascus sampler --

Ks and As usually had either the OXFORD 2.S.J. or the BOSTON N, the middle two on the right column. The Cs usually had the ETOILE 3.B.P. second down in the left column. Ds and Es were what the customer wanted. My BE-Grade from 1895 has the CHAIN J. the top on the middle column, but I haven't seen another B quality gun with those.
