Sportsman 48

I recently reacquired (long story) a Sportsman 48 16 gauge that I inherited. In the process of teaching my daughters to shoot I discovered that the gun will not cycle all three shells with certain ammo... low brass and low loads mainly. Even with the Herters 1 oz 1165 FPS shells sometimes it will not eject the the empty when only one shell is loaded. Is there something that could be wrong with the gun or is that the nature of the beast?

It is a recoil shot gun make sure that the friction ring is not wore bad and mag tube has a light light coat of oil. Also make sure that the recoil spring is flat on each end that can make the ring go sideways and not cycle action fully. Hope this helps.
