pre model 11 autoloading shotgun serial number help

Post by sgtsemo »

I have two pre model 11 autoloading shotguns. the serial numbers are 17793 and 23802. I called Remington and I was told they are both 1905 guns. If the numbers started at 10000 then maybe the first could be but... Is there any lists that can help me out. Remington is normally right on.
I have been a member of RSA for only a couple years and don't have access to the James Tipton article from 2000.

According to the chronology in Jim Tipton's article from the Journal, 17,793 would be nearly the last gun of 1905 and 23,802 would be mid 1906. There have been plenty of guns seen with serial numbers under 10000 and much of the chronology in that article is at odds with the old "between the wars" factory ledger available on this site.

Thank you researcher! That would make more sense . What was the last gun made in 1905? and can someone repost the Tipton
article for us Semi-newbies. Remington performs the great serial number service with very nice people but you can get different dates/years for the same gun from different people for the older guns.
Still a very good and "Free" service.

Yes Mr. Tipton questioned the validity of Remington's records as he had guns in his collection with Serial Numbers below 10,000 and speculated that maybe it was 1,000 or even 100.

I showed him examples of guns below 1,000 and SN 139 but have not seen an example of one below 100.

I firmly believe they started at 1 and hope to someday see an example of a one or two digit gun.

The only definitive serial number/time correlation I have is that the Presentation Gun given to Jeff J. Blanks of Trezevant, TN in June of 1907 was a 25,000 serial number gun.

So within 2 years of the guns introduction at least 25,000 had been produced.

Thanks, as a side note the Butt plate on the 17000 gun says "Remington Automatic" while the 23000 gun says " Remington Arms co" same style but different. Having trouble sending photos :(

Thanks for the butt plate information that is the latest example that I can recall having the early plate on.

Both guns have the smaller carrier button though correct?

There is no "Patent" stampings on the left side of the receiver on the 17,xxx gun is there?

The patent stampings on both guns are of the top of the barrel. None on the left side of the receiver on 17XXX. Both do have the smaller carrier button. I have a 1915 Model 11D 182XXX with the larger one,
though quite fancy.
