I think I've dated this 870 correctly.

Post by slewi »

Hi all! I have made the leap from black powder to modern firearms. I just bought a used Remington 870 Wingmaster, and I think I have dated this gun correctly, but the gun is in too good a shape for me to believe the date is accurate. On the left of the barrel is:

"12 GA for 2 3/4 or shorter shells"
"MOD"
"KS 17" Does this mean May 1969?

On the right of the barrel is stamped:

"Z (R.E.P.)"

The patent no's with this gun are

2,645,873 - 2,675,636 - 2,780,881 - 2,719,375

Now, some questions. I can only get two shells in the magazine and one in the reveiver. Is there a problem with this? I thought these took 4 in the magazine?

And also, if this gun is about to turn 39 years old, will a newer barrel with a changeable choke in the business end fit it?

Thanks for your help. I am looking forward to hanging around here and learning from you all. It's a great site!

You could be correct with your date, but it could also be May 1998. Post the s/n with both prefix and suffix letters. The 3 shell limit is to satisfy some state limits, a plug can be removed from the magazine to give you the maximum capacity.

Here is the serial number. s069334v

Can you explain what info this serial number contains? Also is there a three round limit in PA? Or can I take that plug out?

The S prefix was used 1968 to 1974, your S/n is early in the number sequence, so 1969 looks correct. The V suffix indicates a 12 ga 2 3/4 inch receiver. In Pa you must have a plug installed to prevent loading more than 3 shotgun shells for small game. The plug can be removed to hunt deer with slugs. Some 870 barrels will not interchange, best to try before you buy.

interesting. thanks. how would one estimate a value on that? it's in ridiculously good shape for being so old. it looks better than me, and we were born the same year!

Unlike you, it probably sat in a gun safe for 35 years. The value is more if it has a vent rib, if you bought it at a gun store you no doubt paid a fair price, most shops base the price on the blue book value.

In some states you are required to have the plug when you hunt migratory birds, but not for upland hunting. So best check with your department of wildlife.

My father past away recently and I have inherited a Remington Wingmaster 870 12GA that handles 2 3/4 or shorter shells. I went ahead and called Remington and all they could give me was that it was manufactured in 1968. I would like to find out a little more info on it as well as some documentation ( owners manual ) etc.. Can someone help me out? I would appreciate it since this is my first shotgun I have ever owned and I know that it has not been shot for at least 35 years. I would like to keep it since it is in pretty good shape. The info is below:

Serial # 1247334v

Patent #s 2,645,673 - 2,675,638 - 2,780,881
2,719,375

Not much more to know than the year it was made and what you can see looking at it. It is a 2-3/4" chambered gun. All barrels except SuperMagnum will fit, but 3" shells may not eject properly.
You can download an owner's manual from remington.

Hi guys,

I am new here, so I may be a bit off-topic but I am looking to buy a gun safe and this is a forum google suggested. Do you guys own a gun safe? Can you please give me an advice on which brand to bay?
I was searching and reading about it but I can't decide yet. I also found a website where is an article about recommendations for top rated gun safes, but I would like to hear your opinion too.
Can you help me please?

Thank you
