1889 Serial Number vs Other Numbers

Post by Tamid »

I have a Grade 3 1889 serial number 243907. Instead of the serial number on all the parts the number 478 is on the butt, forearm, receiver and barrels. Was the norm to number the parts different than the serial number?

Your '89 left Ilion in 1904. All major parts such as the barrels, action body, forearm iron, trigger plate & trigger guard should have the complete S/N stamped. Smaller parts may have the last two or three characters stamped on them. The meaning of many of the characters stamped on various parts is lost to the mist of time. 478 most likely is an assembly number.
