I’m looking to help my dad find out info on what we think is a 1889..
I have found the serial number, barrel numbers and various other single and triple digit numbers. It is a Remington Arms co. Ilion NY double hammer. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Numbers on barrels are 38 and 43, number on forearm has serial and 262
Looking for info on an 1889
Re: Looking for info on an 1889
It's an '89. All previous doubles were stamped E. Remington & Sons. The company went broke in about 1887 or 1888 and was reorganized as the Remington Arms Co. in 1888.
If you supply the S/N, we can determine the year it left Ilion.
I assume the 38 & 43 on the barrel lug are pellet counts. Remington used 1 1/4 oz of #8 shot to test pattern their guns. There are 511 pellets in 1 1/4 oz and a leading 3 is assumed in the pellet count --- so -- 338/511=66% or improved modified choke.
There is another number stamped to the left of the S/N on the water table which indicates grade. Remington produced three off-the-shelf grades. #1 has decarbonized steel barrels, #2 (better) has twist steel barrels and #3 (best) has Damascus steel barrels. Grades 4 - 7 were only available via special order.
