Barrel Lengths of Model 1889 Hammer Guns

Post by Jack71 »

I know Model 1889s were made with 30" and 32" barrels, but were 28" barrels also standard length for the lower grade guns?

From what I recall, the '89 off the shelf was only offered in grades 1 through 3. Grades 4 through 7 were all special order so barrel length would be part of the customer's choice.

Yes, that's my understanding as well, off-the-shelf guns were grades 1 (decarbonized steel barrels), 2 (twist barrels) and 3 (Damascus barrels). But my question is were 28" barrels available on grades 1 through 3?

Being a collector of the Remington Hammerless Doubles, my Remington Arms Co. collection of catalogs begins with the October 1894 catalog. There, and in the November 1895 and the April 1897, the Remington Hammer Double (aka Model 1889) is offered in 10- and 12-gauge with 30- or 32-inch barrels. By the 1898 catalog the 16-gauge had been added to the offerings in 28-, 30- and 32-inch barrels and 28-inch barrels were added to the 12-gauge offerings. Through the 1904-05 catalog those gauge and barrel length offerings are given both on the page listing the Grades 1 to 3 and on the page listing the Grades 4 to 7. Beginning with the 1905-06 catalog only the Grades 1 to 3 are listed, and by the first 1906 catalog the 16-gauge was only offered with 28- and 30-inch barrels. The Remington Hammer Double was last listed in the 1908 Remington Arms Co. catalog in Grades 1 to 3, in 10- 12- and 16-gauges. None of the catalogs after the 1904-05 make any mention of the Model 1889 being offered in anything other then Grades 1, 2 and 3.
