Hello, a friend wants to restore his Model 1883 Double Barrel Shotgun to firing condition. It's missing the two side plates (lock assemblies and hammers)... I know those parts are extremely hard to find. Is it possible to use the parts from the model 1889? They seem to show up a little more than the 1882/83 parts do.
Does anyone happen to know whether these parts are interchangeable or compatible, even if minor modification may be necessary?
Thank You!

With the parts you say are missing how do you know it is a Model 1883?

The 1882 and 83 parts are the same except for the hammers. 1889 hammers
will not work.

I believe lock plates from a '89 are stamped Remington Arms Co. whereas earlier models from the E. Remington era did not have any external stamping at all.

Off hand, I would say no, at least not looking at my 82 and 89. There may be a couple of internal parts, but not many.

From my research, its serial number, 14,822, makes it a 1883. At least according to this site: http://m.leeroysramblings.com/Gun%20Art ... le_ID.html2shooter wrote:With the parts you say are missing how do you know it is a Model 1883?

They can say its a 1883 they can not prove it without the hammers. Recorded serial numbers I have of guns 14,669 is 1883---14,738,14,743, 14,747, 14,918 are 1882....
14,968 is 1883..and the list goes on for both few are 1883.
