I recently scored a hang tag for a No. 1 Remington Hammer Double, of 1902 vintage according to Charles Semmer's chronology on page 117 of his book.
It shows the gun being targeted with a UMC SMOKELESS shell 2 5/8" Load No. 8. All well and good. Here is the page for that load from the April 1901, UMC Catalog --
By the 1903 UMC catalogs the SMOKELESS shell had been dropped, probably considered redundant with similar loads in either the NITRO CLUB or ARROW shells. Later hang tags show that the guns were targeted with 12-gauge 2 5/8" NITRO CLUB shells Load No. X8. However, between 1906 and 1907 UMC quit offering 12-gauge 1 1/4 ounce loads in a 2 5/8" case. All of our North American ammunition companies seem to have done this in the 1904 to 1907 time frame. So, here is a hang tag that would be of 1907 vintage --
This hang tag is a bit odd in that it shows Infallible powder which was a dense smokeless powder and should have been shown in grains, 24 grains being the X8 load same as 3 drams of bulk smokeless powder. Here is the page from the 1907 UMC catalog for NITRO CLUB shells with Infallible powder --
Here is another hang tag from Charles' book that would be of a 1908 vintage gun --
On this tag they do use grains for the Infallible dense smokeless powder. And, here is the page from the June 1909 UMC catalog which again shows Load No. X8 being in a 2 3/4 inch case --
