is this an 1894??

Post by mcautoak »

I have had this gun for about 30 years. I have taken it to several gun shows and smiths, but nobody has been able to give any firm info about it. Serial number is P134291. Top of right barrel says "trap gun F grade", top of left barrel says "Remington arms co Ilion ny" It appears to have blued steel barrels. The lock and trigger guard appear to be bright metal with some engraving. The stock is cracked, and had been repaired with a metal plate before I got it. I don't see any rust or pitting anywhere on or in the gun. I am trying to figure out if it's worth restoring. Anyone have an approx. value before and after restoration? I tried attaching pictures, but after 1/2 hour I gave up. No matter what I do, I get a "file to large" message. Not sure if it's me or my computer. I can email pictures.

After posting my original request, I did some more research on this and other sites today. I am pretty sure I have an FE grade 1894. My question now is, will replacing the repaired butt stock lower the value more than not replacing it? The rest of the gun is about 90%.

Yes you have a 1894 FE grade weapon. It was made in 1906. Remington stopped production of all double shotgun models in 1910 (the hammerless 1894 and 1900 plus the 1889 hammer guns) as they saw the future in terms of pumps and autoloaders.

Value? We normally don't give values as so much depends on condition. Maybe another member will have better insight as to stock replacement versus value change. Another approach would be to repair the current stock. I've seen some repairs that are all but invisible.

The two F grade 94's I bought cost between 800 and 1200. Both were nice, but nothing special. If it was mine, I'd try to fix it so it was presentable and shoot it as I do all my old Remington SxS's. If the metal patch doesn't look too bad, just tell everyone it has character.

The FE-Grade Trap Gun was the last addition to the line of Remington Hammerless Double Barrel Shotguns, first appearing in the 1905-06 Remington Arms Co. catalog --

thanks for the reply's. The stock repair is not the best I have seen, but I think I will just leave it the way it is for now.
