1894 A Barrel Replacement
1894 A Barrel Replacement
All,
Picked up a 1894 A Receiver and hand guard and would like to fit a set of barrels. I've read about the problems with parts interchange. I've also read somewhere that parts interchange is much easier within blocks of the same production. I have basic smith skills so I would like to give it a shot.
I've attached photos of the hand-guard and reliever, as well as a barrel that within a year or so of production.
So, for the experts: Is this the barrel set that I need, knowing that it will need to be fit to the receiver.
Thanks

Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
Does the receiver and the barrel width measure the same is it large or small frame. There is over eleven thousand guns difference between the barrels and the receiver if I read the serial numbers correct.
Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
Great question. How do I tell if its a large or small frame?

Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
Looks like extractor barrels and an ejector receiver and forearm.

How do you tell the difference? I take it that the barrels won't fit the receiver?Researcher wrote:Looks like extractor barrels and an ejector receiver and forearm.
Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
The fore end is from an ejector model. I really can't see the ejector/extractor on the barrel that well. In any event, the extractor model will be one piece while ejector model will be split into two pieces - one for each barrel. As far as fitting barrels to action bodies -- you may be able to interchange extractor with ejectors. Haven't tried it but it may work.

Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
The ejector stems are much longer and would show up to this point in the channel under the barrels --
while in extractor barrels that channel is empty, the stem ending right under the hook --

Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
Appreciate the help. Still not clear on the small and large frame. Guess I need to look for a good set of ejector barrels in the ballpark of my S/N. Everything else seems to match up to the ones I've seen.
Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
My small frame measures 1 1/2"+ across the water table while my large frame measures 1 5/8". The large frame was the standard size and relatively few small frames were made.
I'd try to find ejectors. Worth a try. Give Garland Jackson a call at 330-669-2138.

Looks like I have a large frame at 1-5/8". Are you saying that I could get an extractor barrel and add the extractors to it? Thanks again.dieNusse1 wrote:My small frame measures 1 1/2"+ across the water table while my large frame measures 1 5/8". Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
No - what I would try is to replace the extractors in the barrels you have with ejectors.
Re: 1894 A Barrel Replacement
Ok cool. The barrels in the picture are ones I found on line. Being able to replace the extractors with ejectors opens up my options. Thanks.

Hi There is another way to tell the difference in the small frame and the regular frame. Measure the distance between the firing pin holes. On the small frame it is 1 in. from center of one hole to center of the other firing pin hole. On the regular frame it is 1 and 3/16 in. for center of one hole to the center of the other firing pin hole.
