As best I can remember it applies tension to the flat metal piece that slides and sets the safety to "on" when the gun is closed.

I don't see the 10ga Remington hulls listed on the BPI web site or in their new catalog, only Federal hulls - Precision Reloading carries them and cheaper than BPI and they're Remingtons.

Why do you think the stock is not original to the gun, it has the right checkering on the grip

It has sorta/kinda the right checkering on the grip. I don't have a Remington Hammerless 10-gauge and was quite interested when I handled it in Las Vegas some years back, but to my eyes from 60 years of handling them, that stock just isn't Remington work --

The lack of the serial number stamped in the wood might well mean something. I've got stamp sets in several different sizes and fonts and I'm sure plenty of stock makers and dealers do too!!

The stock looks like it came with the gun - too good a fit around the action and butt plate for it not to be - unless someone was really, really good. JMHO
