Model 1889 color

Post by centrion »

Does anyone know the actual process that was used to blue the 1889 and what the color of the bluing was when it was new? I noticed on mine behind the hammer plates and hidden areas that it is kind of a brownish/blackish color (not from rusting).

Thanks

When new, the frame, lockplates, hammers, top-lever, forearm iron, forearm lever, and screwheads would have been color case hardened. Any blueing on any of those parts would have been done after market and is "wrong"!!

Researcher is exactly correct. What you are seeing is the fading of the color case. I have seen some that turn silvery and people think it was nickle plated. Look at the inside forend iron and you may see a varity of colors.

Thanks !!! That explains the color that it is now. Its not a bluing color that i recognized and its not so much as a color as it is a tone.

Thanks a million !!!
