M1882 "Coach gun"??

Post by Dick Hosmer »

I'm in even stranger territory here than in the rifle section, where I occasionally post on Springfield/Remington martial arms, so please bear with me.

A very good friend of mine - who is not computer literate - recently acquired a Remington M1882 with barrels cut to a little over 23". I'd say it is "unusual" to not be some even size, like 24", but the work is VERY good, and the front bead looks like it has always been there. FWIW, there are no Wells Fargo markings! [grin]

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

I have seen several Remington's cut for cowboy shoots at gun shows .The barrels could
have been bulged and cut off to save the gun.
Remington did not make any barrels shorter than 26 inches and that was not available on
all Models. I would say they were cut and sight replaced. Check the end of the barrels for
steel insert soldered between them. They get cut off left open or soldered without steel
insert.I seen a Remington Model 1889 at a gun show with Wells Fargo plate but the
serial number dates gun was made after 1900.telling me it a fake.
