1882 12 ga remington trap sxs, any info pls

Post by idolman68 »

i have an 82 sxs that has fine engraving all over, it has a banner on side plates with remington trap engraved on each side plate. this gun is in exlt cond. and with crisp triggers and good wood. no cracks, chip. and wood around side plates is perfect, dosn't look like ever had side plates removed. bores are good with very little pitting. i'v been told that only one other like mine is in existance. supposedly mr. semmers had the other one. not sure of this but that what i was told. this gun was made in remingtons custom shop in 1886 and is a high grade. since all this info came to me by sxs shooters i thought maybe some one on this forum could give me more or true infor . this is my first post so forgive my spelling or ignorance regarding this gun. i would apprieciate any info on this old side hammer. thks idolman68

What is the serial number of the gun and can you post any photos of the gun?
By the serial number it may be a different Model. We have no idea, nor records, about these early ERS guns. Everything known has been done by years of research and observation. Obviously it was made by E. Remington & Sons, but how anyone could pin it down to being made in 1886 and in the custom shop is questionable. Any high grade gun made by them was special ordered and really no one knows if they were done in a custom shop, but probably. Mr. Semmer did not own such a gun, he had heard of one.

thks for your interest. i do have pictures but i'll have to have some one help me attach them. as to ser. no etc. ser no. 19687. on water table in very small is patent accs 1871, apr 10 1871. couldn't see the last no. without magnifying glass. also on slightly lower on flat i simble like a small i and the no. 8. on the side plates near the front portion is a banner with remington trap gun engaved. the flat s banner has fine engraving all around. on rear of side plates is a hunting dog and on trigger guard is also a hunting dog. in addition all around is fine engraving, hammers, fore piece reliece. the stock has tear drops and very fine checkering, grip has a black cap, the but plate is in excl. cond. and is recessed into the stock at top. the only thing missing i the black end cap on the forepiece. this gun shoots excl with low pressure 3/4 once loads. hammers very tight and real crisp trigger pull. after seeing patend date i guess its an 1871. so much for shooting range experts. some times the sxs club shoots at prado olympic shooting park and this is where i picked up my info. hope this infor will give you more info. if i can get some help with the pictures i'll add them later.

No need to post photos . Your Remington is not a Model 1882. By the serial number 19687, it falls into a Model 1885. Though we cannot pin down the manufacture date exactly, it possibly was produced late 1886.

In addition to the prior post can you please tell me the number of the shut guns made in the various grades and custom shop? As you notice all the metal to wood is in excelent condition and not discolored, chiped or cracked. I will upload 3 more pictures below.

These 9 pictures are basically the best pictures I have showing metal, wood etc. Since there appears to be only 1 or 2 known to exsist. I would like to know if this is museum quality and if you have any estimate of value.
