remington model 1874 info

Post by skim »

I just purchased( I think) a model 1874 and would like to know the year and worth? On the barrels is stamped a.e whitmore patent Aug.8 1871, April 16 1872 , also it says E.Remington &Sons,Ilion,Ny . There is a serial #2745 and on one barrel is a 4 (I ASSUME A GRADE 4 ) .I would appreciate any info on this gun and the value. It is in (very good) range of condition, also it is a 10 guage . THanks

You obviously have a Remington Whitmore Lifter Model Shotgun. Since the serial number was used in 1873 & 1874 it it is difficult to determine the model year. We do not evaluate guns since we can not handle them. I suggest you look it up in the the latest BLUE BOOK of GUN VALUES. at a local gun shop.

Like Jay says, a lot more info is needed to determine Model and Grade. By that serial number it could be a Model 1873 or 1875. Does a small top plate where A.E. Whitmore Patents appear slide back when you open the gun? That number 4 does not indicate Grade. Does the gun have any engraving on the receiver? Are the barrels steel or Damascus?
