Remington 760 30-06 missing bolt carrier spring?

Hi, I have a 1967 Remington 760 30-06 and when I took it apart to clean it, I found the bolt and carrier had no tension between them like my newer model 760s. So I proceeded to take the bolt assembly apart and found that there was no bolt carrier spring or firing pin spring. Is this normal? Did the earlier model guns not have a spring? Is it safe to use without a spring? Any input would be great. Thanks in advance.
