pre serial number model 572 with no barrel dowel screw

Post by spoonbill »

I have a model 572 I'm restoring that is pre serial number and doesn't have the barrel dowel screw in the side of the receiver. I'm trying to properly date the rifle. The barrel codes are DFW. I can't find anything showing when they started adding the barrel dowel screw and why. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Logically, the code should read D-Sept, F-1959, W-assembler reason being there is no F in the month code so it must be the year.

That's the way I was leaning since they hadn't been produced in 1937 and I figured they had the dowel screw by 1985. Any idea when they started adding the screw and why?

I pulled out my Remington 22 book to see what was the deal with the dowel screw and came up with nothing! I was upset because there is a lot of info i that book. Sorry I can't help more.
