Danish Rolling Block Rear Sight

Post by wlw-19958 »

Hi There,

I just acquired a Remington made Danish rolling block and the rear
sight is different that the Danish made one I already have. Does it
look correct for this model?

Yes, it is correct for a period of time in Denmark. I can't tell from the photo but, if the graduations are NOT crossed out, then it is the original 1883 rear sight graduated in the Danish measurement for "Alens". Pre metric Europe used various measurements...Russians used "arshins". If the graduations ARE crossed out, then the sight has been re regulated for meters after 1889. This rifle is referred to as the Model 1867/83. I have two of these Danish rifles with this sight: one Danish and one Remington. Both are chambered for the 11.7x45R. The original rimfire cartridge had a 42mm case. As these have a short chamber they were probably not good candidates for importers in the 1960s to run a .45-70 chamber reamer into them so they could be sold as "45-70 caliber". Because of this, the rim portion of the chamber is still at the original chamber specifications and the rim of a .45-70 case will be too large to chamber. To shoot mine, I turned down the rim of .45-70 cases to the proper diameter then trimmed the cases to 45mm total length.
The above, except for making cases, comes from "Summary: The Remington Rolling Block Weapons used by the Danish Army" by Bjorn Nielsen.

Hi There,

Thanks for the reply!

It doesn't look like graduations have been crossed out.
Here is a close-up of the side of the sight.

I'm glad you mentioned this. This Remington has a much shorter
chamber than the Danish made one I already had (I think it is a
1867/96 version with the 11.7X56R chamber). The rim recess of
the Remington made one is original (.579"-.580") and hence too
small for 45-70.

Here is a picture of the two chamber casts (Remington one on top)

Hi There,

I have been doing some more research on this rifle and have
found some additional information that is slightly confusing
for me. Earlier, on this sight, someone posted a question
about identifying their rolling block. Link to Other Post

It was a Danish model similar to mine but the rear sight is
slightly different.

I will picture the two sights. Mine:

The other one:

They look very similar but the markings on the ladder are
angled on the other sight and straight on mine. Also, the
orientation on the barrel is reversed as compared to mine.
Another difference are the increments on the side of the
sight. Mine is marked 250 on the lower step and 400 on
the higher and the other sight is marked 150 and 350
respectfully. Also, the markings are on the opposite side.

Here is a side view of my sight:

Anyone care to give me some more insight on these differences?

Thanks in advance!
