I have acquired a 1891 Remington made in 1917, Serial Number 713278 that has been modified to a carbine. It would seem to be a Bannerman rifle but there are some differences:
1. Still 7.62x54mm caliber instead of .30-06
2. Has a full style military stock, cut back to accommodate the 23.5 inch barrel
3. Has a upper handguard that comes back along the rear sight partially unlike the 1891 or M91 handguards.
4. Has a 1903A3 Springfield front sight unlike the ones made for the carbines (M91/38 etc.)
5. Has the normal barrel band w/screw at the front of the stock and a band retained by 2 wood screws in front of the rear sight.
A gunsmith had said that a reference was found for 418 rifles made in this configuration as a training rifle in a book "Remington rifles in the Military" or a similar title.
Is there any information for the original configuration of the 1891 by serial number and is there any reference for the modification to a carbine.
Everything is assembled well so Bubba didn't use a file and hacksaw. The gun is made from parts of 3 different rifles is you rely on the serial numbers, magazine 135xxx, buttplate 286xxx and the barrel 713278.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil
