1867 Rolling Block Pistol

Post by MikeS27 »

My dad was passed down this pistol from his father before he passed away. I am looking on any and all information regarding this pistol. (except $ value- being that my grandfather passed away when I was really young there is no $ that could buy it). What is known about it is very little except it is a 1867 Remington Rolling Block Pistol in .50 Caliber.

Hello Mike,
Your pistol was one of 6500 originally made as the model 1865 pistol for the Navy and delivered in 1867 and 1868. On the right side of the frame is the proof mark ”P” along with the letters FCW for Frank C Warner who was a military inspector at the time. There was also his FCW cartouche stamped on the left side of the grip, which may have worn off over time. The 1865 pistol was made in 50 caliber rimfire, had an 8 and 1/2 inch barrel and a spur trigger without a trigger guard. The Navy then got interested in centerfire ammunition and in 1870 began returning an estimated 6358 to Remington for alteration. The barrel was shortened to 7 inches, the breechblock was changed to centerfire and a new trigger and trigger guard was installed. Because the Navy pistols were scattered all over the world it took six years to complete the rework. The “E.B.” stamp on the top of the barrel is the inspection stamp of Edward Barrett one of four inspectors to inspect the work. The other three were J.M.B.Clitz (J.M.B.C.), Henry Erben (H.E.) and W.D. Whiting (W.D.W.). Jerry Landskron in his book Remington Rolling Block Pistols estimates that Edward Barrett inspected only about eight percent of the altered pistols or around five hundred so it is a fairly rare pistol with his stamp.

I hope this helps,

Bill
