new to site 1858 questions

Post by bird »

Hi,
New to this site and just acquired a 1858 patented pistol serial 24554 stamped under the barrel. upon removing the grips the same number shows BUT also # 1224. 1224 is also stamped in to the inside of both the wooden grips. The usual info is stamped on the top of the barrel. Can anyone figure out what year it was built and what the 1224 means? It has been converted somewhere along the lines to accept cartridges and it seems to have been integrated well.
Thank You

Hi,
Your Revolver was made in May of 1863. I believe the 1224 is a conversion number. Remington converted their revolvers to fire five 46 Rim Fire Cartridges. They stamped a conversion number on the underside of the barrel either in front of the latch post or behind it, on the grip frame under the grips and in some cases on the trigger guard tab. The first revolvers converted (Type 1) did not have an ejector while the later revolvers (Type 2 and 3) had an ejector added.
Gunsmiths and armories converted many revolvers to 44 center fire cartridges. These are six shot revolvers and may have conversion numbers and or ejectors.
