when was it produced?

Post by toot »

I have a 44, cal. model 1858 original Remington, serial # 28xxx. with a W stamped on the barrel, cylinder, frame, etc. I would like to know what the W stamping means and would like to know when it was produced? so far I have had no success. I hope some one can help me? any and all information will greatly appreciated.

Hello Toot,
Your revolver was manufactured in July of 1863. The “W” is an inspection mark, which was placed on the major parts once they passed inspection. After the revolver passed inspection the Principal Sub-inspector stamped his cartouche on the left grip indicating the revolver was accepted by the Ordnance Department.
