Remington 1858 New Model Serialnumber - Request

Post by Macapuno_Verde »

Hello to everyone in this outstanding forum concerning Remington Firearms.
We are located in Germany and have a few questions concerning this Remington 1858 NM Army revolver.
When was it manufactured and does this revolver have matching serialnumbers plus are the military proof stamps complete.
We guess it must be a very early Remington 1856 NM Army revolver due to the low serialnumber.
Regards
Mikel

Hello Mikel,
Your New Model Army was made in July of 1863. Remington made approximately 148,000 Army Revolvers during the War so yours is a fairly early one. Remington normally marked the serial number in three places: the under side of the barrel, on the left grip frame under the grip and on the tab of the trigger guard. In some cases the serial number or a part of it was stamped on the cylinder if some fine tuning was necessary to get the cylinder to work in the revolver. It looks to have complete military inspection marks. There should be a cartouche stamped under the screw hole on the left grip. These are usually light or in some cases completely worn off on revolvers, which have seen hard usage. There seems to be the remains of a cartouche on the grip in your fifth picture. Your revolver has the correct cone front sight for its’ serial number. The screw escutcheon on the left grip seems to be missing.

I hope this information is helpful,

Bill

@billt
Thank you very much for your reply.
Here is the second one with some more interesting markings on it.
We guess it is also one very early Remington 1858 New Model Army.
Even so its a serial mixmaster it might still be a interesting piece.
We are very happy that this board is existing. Keep it up!
Regards
Mikel
