Remington Smoot #1 & #2

Post by llyc »

I have been doing some research on #1 & #2 Smoots and have started a spreadsheet. I have been doing random searches and documenting model #, serial #s, finish, condition, and grip type......most of the information is from past auctions. Does anyone know of additional publications that might carry that type of detailed information? Also if anyone has a #1 or #2 Smoot that wouldn't mind sharing the above information. it would be appreciated..... I have hit a wall with internet searches.
The Parker book has been an excellent source of reference material.

I recently retired and finally have the time to try to document survivors.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry...........just saw this.
So far I've only found 6 #1s.....725,1803,2048,2197,2412 and one other that didn't list the serial #. I only found two #2s.....532, 1732. I've seen some others that I know are different by photos but haven't recorded them because I don't have the serial number.
How did you make out with the one you looked at?

Serial number 266. full blue, amber grips, near new condition. Nicest blued Smoot that I have seen.
I believe it's .30cal cyl 13/16" bbl 2 13/16"

Sounds like a great find.
Did you notice whether the ejector was held on by a pin or a screw, or if the ejector was stepped in diameter?
Did you take it home?

ejector seems to be stepped slightly (seam) and there is a screw at the muzzle end.

That will make it a #1........thanks for the information I will add it to my spread sheet. Based on the serial number that you gave this "blued" #1 isn't recorded in the Dr. Parker book. The only blued #1 recorded was at the 1 to 200 range with a revolving recoil shield. The earliest blued #1 recorded was a fixed shield @ 1200 to 1400 range.

Chip, this gun just came out of an old home's pantry drawer about 20 miles from Ilion, NY.... been there for a couple of generations wrapped in a nice cloth. Looking at the chambers in the cylinder & the breech it may have not been fired since it left the factory. Appreciate your input. Thanks.

That's a great find! I would like to see it if you have time to post some photos.
It's neat to hear about stuff still coming out of dressers!
A friend of mine has a farm pretty close to there. I didn't realize it was so close to the Remington Museum. The next time I get up there during the week I plan to visit.
Do you collect Smoots?
