870 help needed

Post by huddles »

Hello all, I bought an 870 express. the seller indicated it will take up to 3". The info stamped indicates it will take 3" in Magnum receivers. How can I tell if it has this?

serial number ends in M. is this important?

cheers,

P

Hi Huddles,
The "M" in the last digit of the serial number (suffix) indicates that the receiver is a 12 gauge 3 inch magnum. A stamping on the barrel will indicate 3 inch shells. If your gun has both of those features, in my opinion, you have a 3 inch magnum.

My 870 is stamped on the receiver 870 express magnum, so I always assumed it meant it was good for magnum rounds. The barrel is stamped for 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells.
